Is "film style" just a fad?

On the 5th of April, I was working at home, almost without going out.

In addition to writing two manuscripts, I also copied the RAW data of my old photos from Lightroom into Capture One and redeveloped them for my work.

In all the photos I developed today, I used a film-like style (Capture One term. (a so-called filter) was applied.

All of the photos in this article are also done in a film style.

This "film-like" taste can be said to be a big movement after Instagram.

In fact, in the last few years or so, many of the photos you see in magazines and online articles have been adjusted to look like film.

Some of them are clearly adjusted to look like film, some of them are processed to look like film, but this is the current trend and basic taste.

When I apply the film style when developing RAW, I feel that it's subtraction.

When RAW data is loaded into the developing software, the image displayed is relatively flat, colorful and rich in information.

From there, after adjusting the contrast and colors and applying the film style, it's easy to see the before/after comparison. I understand that I was choosing to emphasize what I wanted to show by stripping away the information contained in the RAW.

This feeling of "trimming down the amount of information" is present even without using a film style, but it is stronger when applying a film style.

And there's another benefit to the film style. Applying a style created by someone other than yourself fades the ego from the work and adds a kind of objectivity to it somehow.

In the past, digital photography was initially intended to catch up with film, but before you know it, digital has become far superior to analog in terms of detail.

Maybe next time I'm trying to get closer to film in terms of tone and color.

A fad that has gone against the grain? No, I don't know about that.

This is because even Hollywood blockbuster movies shot with the latest digital equipment are made in a "film look," which is a natural way of making pictures.
